TOURNAMENT STATISTICAL RECORDS 1989-90 SEASON
Last modified: April 25, 2000 11:23 AM
Records are being added slowly as they are gradually being decompressed from 5 1/4" floppy disks, or retyped from paper records. Some files are missing. If you have information, corrections, or a reminiscence to add, please do so. Note: the format of the statistics is taken from notes at the time, and may not be consistent from tournament to tournament.
After completion of the 1989-90 Intramurals, the players on the winning team and the top players statistically were invited to take the tryout test. The test was diagnostic in nature, focusing on a player's ability to answer questions in eight arbitrary categories. Players were given 14 minutes to complete the test. After the test, we played a few questions with a buzzer system in order to refresh my memory of the player in the tournament. Players were selected for the team based on the following criteria, in order of importance: past performance with the team, performance in the intramural, areas of strength on the test, number of answers correct on the test, my gut instinct. A different test was used every year. Here's the 1989-90 test.

Notes:
Tournament was for undergraduates only. First tournament we attended directed by Carol Guthrie. Prior to the N. C. State game, the team was looking sluggish - especially Jim. Some novel tactics were tried. When we couldn't get a window open to recreate the "apology scene" from A Fish Called Wanda, I just had Wes pick Jim up and hold him upside down until he promised to score more tossups. Jim got five the next match. Perhaps we should have done this before every game.
